Our Achievements
BSA has been working hard to represent the concerns of its members, landholders and businesses – particularly within the Western Downs and Surat Basin regions. BSA representatives have enjoyed robust discussions with a range of Federal and State Government Ministers and departmental officers, politicians of all persuasions, university researchers and scientists, economists, hydrologists, CSG industry representatives, community groups, industry organisations like APPEA and QRC and other peer organisations like Agforce and QFF.
Representatives from BSA have also been regularly interviewed by local, metropolitan and national media – print, web, radio and TV – including the Australian, the Queensland Country Life, The Courier-Mail (including QWeekend Magazine), ABC Radio, ABC’s Four Corners and Channel Nine’s Sixty Minutes.
BSA representatives have worked to unravel the complexities of the various laws and government policies that govern the industry and affect landholders. In doing so, BSA has provided formal submissions to numerous Government discussion papers, policies, legislation and regulation. In all of these submissions, forums and media interviews, BSA has taken the opportunity to inform others on the concerns of landholders and look for ways to achieve sustainable industry. Some of the achievement BSA has helped to drive:
- Advocacy for more groundwater research
- Banning Btex chemicals in fraccing
- Introduction of trigger thresholds
- Risk assessment for fraccing
- Changes in WOLA (water) bill
- Changes to fraccing/well simulation standards in NROLA bill
- Banning of evaporation ponds
- Lengthened time periods for submissions
- Pressure for more on the ground water commission officers, pressure for an LNG enforcement unit
- Better notification for landholders (not just public notice)
- Called for baseline monitoring – BSA one of the drivers for Under Water Management Impact Report.
- Keep consequential loss in the legislation
- Better treatment of landholders by CSG companies
- Improving information flow to landholders – through seminars, press statements, website, enews
- Feed into Agforce and Surat Basin leaders groups
- Highlight important issues in Underground Water Impact Management Report
- Review of “Occupier” definition in legislation
- Publishing of the Not at Any Cost, and BSA Principles of Coexistence
Despite these achievements, there are still many issues that have been left unaddressed. BSA needs your membership to continue to get the message to our Government that this industry cannot come at any cost.
